New in Million Lords, Start Here
When you first start the game you will be surrounded by neutral cities (except for the case in which you spawn on an old continent, which doesn't happen often*). You will be able to attack those neutral cities to grow your strength, your production, and your level. But as soon as you hit 30 city's in total, the neutral city's will get protection and you can't attack them anymore.
After the short time of building up your power by attacking neutral city's with only 20 defense, you will face a greater challenge: Attacking other Players to grow your power and your level even more. Other players are a whole new and different challenge then you had before. Their defense is most likely way better than the defense of the neutral city's, since the produce troops over time. Their level 1 cities will have 20 defense, but also additional troops, that count as the defense as well. They will produce troops in the cities over time which will make the defense greater with every minute. They can also get cities at a higher level than 1. If they spend their gold on upgrading a city to level 10 for example, just the city defense alone will be 300 already. And with potential defensive skills or items, their defense may be even better. To know about that factor you should always scout and look into the detailed report. Actual players may also move troops around in their city's to stop your attacks. Or they may counter-attack and try to take away your city's! All that is different from attacking neutral cities This is a whole new factor you will have to calculate when you attack other players.
To work against this you will want to skill mostly into attack skills (Striker and Fearless) because at the start the city's change owners a lot. It is not worth skilling into defensive skills yet. Neither is skilling into production because you will get most of your troops and gold by leveling up until you get some city's and have high production. Often the changing point is around level 50-60.
In the beginning, you should also try always attacking with at least 100% XP gain. Even better if it's 150-200%. A good tip at that point is that you really shouldn't care about anyone below 100%, especially when you have desertion. Its simply not worth fighting at that point, no matter what you get. Because at the start you really want to level up since it is your biggest troop and gold income for now. And wasting troops gold etc. on stupid attacks like that won't help you at all.
